Mail Configuration for Apple MacOSX (10.7)

About this page

This page shows how to configure Mail for the first time. The Adjusting mail settings section shows how to confirm the settings you have made. The Junk mail section introduces the spam filter, and the Test settings and getting mail section shows how to send and receive email.

Setup

1. Go to your dock and click on the Mail icon. If you do not see it in your dock, you should be able to find it in the Applications folder in the hard drive.

2. The Welcome to Mail wizard will open.

3. In the Welcome to Mail window, enter the following settings:

Full Name Your name
E.g. Taro Asahi
Email Address Enter your email address.
E.g. ab4t-ash@asahi-net.or.jp
Password Your Asahi Net password.
Enter in lower case (small) characters.

A note about your Asahi Net email address
The examples above show a default Asahi Net email address based on your Asahi Net User ID. Asahi Net's MyMail service allows you to create your own email address. If you have not yet registered an Asahi Net MyMail address, click here to find out more about how to do so.

4. Click Continue.

5. In the Incoming Mail Server window, enter the following settings:

Account Type POP
Description Asahi Net
Incoming Mail Server pop.asahi-net.or.jp
User Name Your Asahi Net User ID
E.g. ab4t-ash
Enter in lower case (small) characters.
Password Your Asahi Net password
Enter in lower case (small) characters.

6. Click Continue.

7. In the Incoming Mail Security window, make these settings.

Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Check this.
Authentication Choose Password

8. Click Continue.

9. In the Outgoing Mail Server window, enter the following settings:

Description Asahi Net
Outgoing Mail Server mail.asahi-net.or.jp
Use only this server Check this.
Use Authentication Check this.
User Name Your Asahi Net User ID
E.g. ab4t-ash
Enter in lower case (small) characters.
Password Your Asahi Net Password.
Enter in lower case (small) characters.

10. Click Continue.

11. In the Outgoing Mail Security window, make these settings.

Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Check this.
Authentication Choose MD5 Challenge-Response

12. Click Continue.

13. In the Account Summary window, confirm that all your settings are correct. If they are not, press the Go Back button and make corrections.

Take account online Check this.

14. Click Create.

15. You are now returned to the Mac Mail window. Please continue with Adjusting mail settings as explained below.


Adjusting mail settings

16. From the Mail menu, choose Preferences.

17. Click the Accounts button then click on the Account Information tab and check your settings.

Account Type POP
Description Name for this Mail Account
E.g. Asahi Net
Email Address Enter your email address.
E.g. ab4t-ash@asahi-net.or.jp
Full Name Your name
E.g. Taro Asahi
Incoming Mail Server pop.asahi-net.or.jp
User Name Your Asahi Net User ID
E.g. ab4t-ash
Enter in lower case (small) characters.
Password Your Asahi Net password
Enter in lower case (small) characters.

18. Click on the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) drop down bar.

19. Choose Edit SMTP Server List.

20. In the window that appears confirm your settings (as listed below).

Server Name mail.asahi-net.or.jp
mails.asahi-net.or.jp *
* Only use the mails.asahi-net.or.jp mail server if you are using our Virus Check Service.

21. Click on the Advanced tab, and make sure your settings are as listed below.

Use default ports (25, 465, 587) Check the radio button
Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Check the box
Authentication MD5 Challenge-Response
User Name Your Asahi Net User ID
E.g. ab4t-ash
Enter in lower case (small) characters.
Password Your Asahi Net password
Enter in lower case (small) characters.

22. Click OK.

23. Click on the Advanced tab. In the window that appears, make sure your settings are as listed below.

Enable this account Check the box
Include when automatically checking for new messages Check the box
Remove copy from server after retrieving a message Arbitrary
After one week Arbitrary
Prompt me to skip messages over___KB Arbitrary
Port 995
Use SSL Check the box
Authentication Authenticated POP (APOP)

24. Click the Composing button. If prompted to Save Changes, click Save.

25. In the Composing: Message Format box, choose Plain Text. Other settings are arbitrary. Close the window.

26. If your Mac is connected to the Internet, you should be able to send and receive email.


Junk mail settings

27. Mail has an optional Junk Mail filter that may be helpful in controlling spam mail.

From the Mail menu, choose Preferences.

28. Click on the Junk Mail icon.

29. For information on how to use Junk Mail, please open the Help menu and type in Junk Mail or contact Apple for further support.


Test settings and getting mail

30. To test Mail's settings, you will want to send yourself an email. If you are connected to the Internet you can do this by clicking on the Compose new message button in the Inbox.

31. Enter the following settings.

To: Your Asahi Net default email address or MyMail email address.
Eg. ab4t-ash@asahi-net.or.jp
Cc. Leave this blank
Subject: Test
Body Arbitrary
Eg. Test

32. Click the Send button.

33. Enter your Asahi Net password if prompted, then click the OK button.

34. Your email will go out. To get your email, click the Get new messages in all accounts button in the Inbox button bar.
