Windows Live Mail 2011


Windows Live Mail 2011 is email software supplied by Microsoft. A free download of Windows Live Essentials that includes Mail is available from Microsoft's homepage. Get: [ Windows Live Essentials: ]

These instructions assume you already have and are using a Hotmail, Messenger or Xbox LIVE account which means you already have a Windows Live ID and an account to log in with. There are no settings needed to log into and use your Windows Live Account. Need a new Windows Live ID? Get one [ here ].

1. Click the Start button. Click All Programs, then open Windows Live Mail. If online, go ahead and log in with your Windows Live ID.

Click the Start button. Click Windows Mail.

2. Click your Windows Live Mail Inbox, click Accounts, and then click Email.

Select Accounts

3. In the Add your email accounts window that pops up, make these settings. Then click Next.

Email address Your ASAHI Net email address
(eg. ab4t-ash@asahi-net.or.jp)
Password Your ASAHI Net Password.
Enter in lower case (small) characters.
Remember this password Check the box if you don't want to have to type your password every time you download your email.
Display name for your sent messages The name you want identified on the account.
Make this my default email account Arbitrary.
Manually configure server settings Check the box

* A note about your ASAHI Net email address

The example above shows a default ASAHI Net email address based on an ASAHI Net User ID. ASAHI Net's MyMail service allows you to create your own email address. If you have not yet registered an ASAHI Net MyMail address, click here.

4. In the Configure server settings window make these settings. Then click Next.

E-mail Account

5. A window will pop up letting you know that your account has been added. If you need to add another account, please click on Add another email account link. When finished, click the Finish button, and you should be returned to the Windows Live Mail Inbox.

6. Click your Windows Live Mail ASAHI Net Account (eg. ASAHI (Taro_ASAHI), click the Accounts tab, and then click the Properties button.

Select Accounts

7. In the ASAHI Net Inbox Properties window that pops up, under the General tab, make these settings.

Mail Account Arbitrary name for your ASAHI Net account.
[eg. Asahi(Taro_ASAHI)]
Name Your name written in the way you want it to appear when people get your email.
(eg. Taro ASAHI)
Organization Arbitrary.
E-mail address Your ASAHI Net email address (eg. ab4t-ash@asahi-net.or.jp) or your ASAHI Net MyMail address if you have registered one.
Reply address Only enter an email address here if you want to receive the reply to a different email address than you entered in the E-mail address box.
Include this account when receiving mail or synchronizing. Check the box.

8. Click the Servers tab. Make your settings as follows.

My incoming mail server is a POP3
Incoming mail (POP3) pop.asahi-net.or.jp
Outgoing mail (SMTP) mail.asahi-net.or.jp
Email username Your ASAHI Net User ID
(eg. ab4t-ash)
Enter in lower case (small) characters.
Password Your ASAHI Net Password.
Enter in lower case (small) characters.
Remember password Check the box if you don't want to have to type your password every time you download your email.
Log on using clear text authentication Do not check this box.
Log on using secure password authentication Do not check this box.
Log on using authenticated POP(APOP) Check this box.
My server requires authentication Check this box.

Click the Start button. Click Windows Mail.

9. Click the Settings button.

10. Check the Use same settings as my incoming mail server box. Click the OK button.

Select Accounts

11. Click the Advanced tab. Make your settings as follows.

Outgoing mail (SMTP) 465
This server requires a secure connection (SSL) Check the box.
Incoming mail (POP3) 995
This server requires a secure connection (SSL) Check the box.

General Tab

12. Confirm that 465 and 995 are still in their respective boxes.

13. Click the Apply button.

14. Click the OK button, and you should be returned to the Windows Live Mail Inbox.

15. If your computer is connected to the Internet, click the Send/Receive button to download your ASAHI Net email.

16. If your computer is connected to the Internet, you can also test your settings by clicking the Email message button, and sending a test email to your ASAHI Net email address, from your ASAHI Net email address.

17. If you were unable to receive your ASAHI Net email or have problems with sending email, return to the top of this page and check your settings again.
