Thunderbird 1.0 - How to add a mail account

These instructions for Thunderbird 1.0 are targeted at dial-up service users. If you are using a broadband service (ADSL or FTTH) you may find some differences between what you see on your screen and the instructions listed below. Please contact ASAHI Net if you are unable to complete the setup of Thunderbird 1.0.

1. Open Thunderbird. Double-click on the Mozzilla Thunderbird icon.

2. Click on the Tools menu and select Account Settings.
(If this is the first time you are opening Thunderbird, skip to no#4.)

3. Click on the Add Account.

4. In the Account Wizard window that pops up, choose Email account.

Click Next.

5. Identity.
Enter the following information:
Your Name in the way you want it to appear when people receive your email.
Email address the address that you will use with this account.

A note about your ASAHI Net email address
The example below shows a default ASAHI Net email address based on your ASAHI Net User ID. ASAHI Net's MyMail service allows you to create your own email address. If you have not yet registered an ASAHI Net MyMail address, click here.

6. Server Information.
Make the following settings:

    Click the POP radio button.
    Enter the Incoming Server: pop.asahi-net.or.jp
    Click the box for Use Global Inbox (depending on your preference).

Click Next.

7. User Names.
Enter your ASAHI Net User ID:
Incoming User Name: Enter your ASAHI Net User ID (in lower case characters).
Outgoing User Name: Enter your ASAHI Net User ID (in lower case characters).
(eg. ab4t-ash)

Click Next.

8. Account Name.
Enter the name you will use to refer to this account in the Account Name box.
(eg. ASAHI Net account).

9. Congratulations!

Confirm that your account settings are correct,
then click the Finish button.

10. The Accounts Settings window will appear showing the new account you have made.
Click on the account that you want to Confirm. (eg. ASAHI Net Account)

    Account Name: (eg. ASAHI Net Account)
    Your Name: (eg. Asahi Taro)
    Email Address: (eg. ab4t-ash@asahi-net.or.jp)
    Reply-to-Address: (eg. ab4t-ash@asahi-net.or.jp)
    Other options are arbitrary.

11. Server Settings Click on Server Settings in the left hand section.

Confirm your settings:
    Server Type: POP Mail Server
    Server Name: pop.asahi-net.or.jp
    Port: 995
    User Name: (eg. ab4t-ash)
    Check box Use secure connection (SSL)
    Other options are arbitrary.

12. Click on the Advanced button.

    a. In the SMTP tab:
    Confirm your settings:
      Server Type: mail.asahi-net.or.jp:465

    b. In the POP tab:
    Confirm your settings:
      Choose Global Inbox (Local Folders Account)
      Check Include this server when getting new mail
Click the OK button.

13. Click the Outgoing Server (SMTP) link.
These settings are required:

    Server Name: mail.asahi-net.or.jp
    Port: 465
    User Name: (eg. ab4t-ash)
    Use secure connection: SSL

14. Click on the Advanced button.

    You should see the designated SMTP server here.
      mail.asahi-net.or.jp:465(Default)

Click the OK button.

Now click the OK button again and close the Account Settings window.

15. If you are connected to the Internet, click the Get Mail button to download your ASAHI Net email.
