Email software - Virus Check Option
Before you make settings, please check the following.
- You have registered for our
Expanded Services, before
using SMTP authentication or APOP authentication. You only need to do this once;
registration is free.
- You are using email software that offers SMTP authentication.
- The email software you use has functionality for POP over SSL/TLS (recommended),
SMTP over SSL/TLS
(recommended)
and/or APOP.

Important

If you are using anti-virus software or firewall software, you may have activated it to
check your email on sending. Sometimes this can cause
SMTP authentication to fail. In this case, you may need to disable the setting in that
software related to the sending of email.
Recommended email software settings
ASAHI Net recommend you use the most secure settings possible for the email software you
use.

If you have a setting in your email software to "leave a copy of the mail on the server"
then you may find that changing the mail server settings causes your email software to once
again download mail you have already downloaded. This is because your email software can
determine that a different server is being used. Please take care.
Windows

Outlook Express 6.x
1. From the Tools menu, select Accounts.
2. Click the Mail tab and double-click on the Mail Account
that you have for your ASAHI Net email account.
3. On the General tab:
Make sure the E-mail address entered is a valid email address.
Also make sure Include this account when receiving mail or
synchronizing is checked.
4. On the Servers tab:
Incoming mail (POP3) should be: pop.asahi-net.or.jp
Outgoing mail (SMTP) should be: mails.asahi-net.or.jp
Account name should be: your ASAHI Net ID.
Enter the ID in lower case characters.
Password should be: the password for the ASAHI Net ID.
Enter the password in lower case
characters.
5. Check the My server requires authentication box.
6. Click the Settings button.
7. Check the Use the same settings as my incoming mail server
button.
If not using ASAHI Net's incoming server
8. Check Log on using.
Account name should be: your ASAHI Net ID.
Enter the ID in lower case characters.
Password should be: the password for the ASAHI Net ID.
Enter the password in lower case
characters.
9. Click OK.
10. On the Connections tab:
Always connect to this account using should be unchecked if
you are using an always-on connection service such as ADSL or FTTH.
If using dial-up, check the box and in the long box select the name
of the dial-up connection.
11. Click Apply.
12. Click OK.
13. From the Tools menu, select Options.
14. On the Send tab:
Make sure that Plain Text is selected for
Mail Sending Format.
Make sure that Plain Text is selected for
News Sending Format.
15. Click Apply.
16. Click OK.
Windows

Netscape 7
1. From the Windows menu, select Mail & Newsgroups.
2. From the Edit menu, select Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings.
3. For the Account Settings category:
Make sure Your Name contains your name.
Make sure Email Address contains a valid email address.
Uncheck the box for Compose messages in HTML format.
4. For the Server Settings category:
Make sure Server Name contains pop.asahi-net.or.jp
Make sure User Name contains : your ASAHI Net ID.
Enter the ID in lower case characters.
Make sure Port contains 110.
5. For the Outgoing Server (SMTP) category:
Make sure Server Name contains mails.asahi-net.or.jp
Make sure Port is empty or contains 25.
Check the Use name and password box.
Make sure User Name contains : your ASAHI Net ID.
Enter the ID in lower case characters.
Make sure Never is selected for Use secure connection (SSL).
6. Click OK.
Macintosh

Outlook Express 5.x
1. From the Tools menu, select Accounts.
2. On the Mail tab, highlight the Mail Account
that you have for your ASAHI Net email account, then click
the Edit button.
3. On the Account Settings tab:
Make sure the Name box contains your name.
Make sure the E-mail address box contains a valid email address.
Make sure the Account ID box contains your ASAHI Net ID.
Enter the ID in lower case characters.
Make sure the POP server box contains: pop.asahi-net.or.jp.
Click the Save password box if you wish.
Enter the password in lower case
characters.
Make sure the SMTP server box contains: mails.asahi-net.or.jp.
4. Click the Click here for advanced sending options button.
5. Under SMTP server section:
Click the SMTP server requires authentication box.
Click the Use same settings as incoming mail server button.
If not using ASAHI Net's incoming server
Click the Log on using button.
Account ID should be: your ASAHI Net ID.
Enter the ID in lower case characters.
Password should be: the password for the ASAHI Net ID.
Enter the password in lower case
characters.
6. Click OK.
Macintosh

Mail 10.1
1. From the Mail menu, select Preferences.
2. Highlight the mail account that you have for your ASAHI Net email account, then click
the Edit button.
3. On the Account Information tab:

Account Type should be set to POP Account.
Email Address should be a valid email address.
Full Name should be your name.
Host name should be pop.asahi-net.or.jp.
User name should be : your ASAHI Net ID.
Enter the ID in lower case characters.
Password should be : the password for the ASAHI Net ID.
Enter the password in lower case
characters.
The SMTP Host box must contain: mails.asahi-net.or.jp.
4. Click the Use authentication when sending mail box.
SMTP User should be : your ASAHI Net ID.
Enter the ID in lower case characters.
SMTP Password should be : the password for the ASAHI Net ID.
Enter the password in lower case
characters.
5. On the Account Options tab:
Enable this account should be checked.
Include this account when checking for new mail should be checked.
Delete messages on server after downloading can be checked at your
preference.
Connect to server using port should be set to 110.
6. Click the OK button.
Macintosh

Mail 10.2
1. From the Mail menu, select Preferences.
2. Highlight the mail account that you have for your ASAHI Net
email account, then click the Edit button.
3. On the Account Information tab:
Click the Outgoing Mail Server dropdown box.
Select Add Server.
4. In the SMTP Server Options window make these settings:
Outgoing Mail Server must contain mails.asahi-net.or.jp.
Server port should be : 25
Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) should not be checked.
Authentication should be : Password.
User Name should be : your ASAHI Net User ID.
Password should be : the password for the ASAHI Net ID.
5. Click the OK button.
Macintosh

Mail 10.4
1. From the Mail menu, select Preferences.
2. Highlight the mail account that you have for your ASAHI Net
email account, then click the Edit button.
3. On the Account Information tab:
Click the Outgoing Mail Server dropdown box.
Select Add Server.
4. In the SMTP Server Options window make these settings:
Outgoing Mail Server must contain mails.asahi-net.or.jp.
Server port should be : 465
Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) should be checked.
Authentication should be : MD5 Challenge-Resoponse.
User Name should be : your ASAHI Net User ID.
Password should be : the password for the ASAHI Net ID.
5. Click the OK button.
